Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner, H.E. Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba, on Monday, 25th May, 2026, joined colleague Heads of Mission, State officials of Ghana, and distinguished guests from Ghana at the launch of Ghana’s electronic visa (e-visa) portal by President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking at the event held at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel, President Mahama detailed that the idea was not about opening a digital platform but a reiteration of his country’s commitment to invention and governance, and to provide efficient services.
The president proclaimed that from 25th May, 2026, which was the African Union Day, holders of African passports will no longer be required to pay visa fees when travelling to Ghana.
This decision, according to him, is aimed at promoting the unification agenda of the African continent as envisioned in The African Passport and Free Movement of People, Agenda 2063.
Guest speaker, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, Senator Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, JP, highly praised Ghana for progressing African unity and simplifying stronger networks between Africa and the Caribbean while applauding Ghana’s continued commitment to Pan-Africanism.
With this electronic visa (e-visa) portal, travelers will now apply online and get their visas without visiting embassies.

The ceremony held at the forecourt of the statehouse brought together officials of the government of Ghana, members of the diplomatic community, the armed forces of Ghana, and school-going pupils
Ghana’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson, hoisted the flag of Ghana at the ceremony, while the Zimbabwean ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Kufa E. Chinoza, who doubles as the dean of the African group of Ambassadors, hoisted that of the African Union Flag.
The theme for this year’s Africa Union Day Commemoration is "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063".
